A Jamboree Experience for Adults not attending the Jamboree
The 6 Counties of Greater London have been asked to assist the Jamboree Organisers in providing adult volunteers to assist in the Meeting and Greeting of overseas members of the International Service Team (IST) and then the Contingents.
Other teams are required to see their safe departure after the event. In total, over 40,000 people will attend the jamboree. Greater London Middlesex West, through the Heathrow Port Liaison Officer, has agreed to cover Heathrow. Surrey and Hertfordshire are to cover Gatwick, Luton and Stansted. This leaves Central London – the coach stations and railway stations.
Known arrivals will need to be met and escorted to Baden-Powell House in South Kensington, where they will board pre-arranged coaches to take them to the Jamboree Site. There will also be other groups and individuals staying in and around London, who will need to catch coaches from Baden-Powell House. Coordinated by Rex Smith, (Assistant County Commissioner International for Greater London Middlesex West) each day will require 2 teams, one for a morning and early afternoon shift and the second late afternoon and early evening. Rex is looking for at least 20 people per day to help or 4 people per County other than GLMW.
When is help needed ?
ex has been asked to provide teams on 23 and 24 July (with smaller teams on 27 July) and again on 7, 8 and 9 August (with smaller teams on 11 and 12 August).
Free Jamboree Day Visitors’ Ticket
or those volunteering on 2 days, a free Jamboree Day Visitors’ Ticket (worth £20) will be available. Volunteers will also receive a Jamboree scarf. Expenses will be paid. It is hoped to hold a training session in London of about 2 hours to outline emergency and safety requirements and to meet the National Organiser.
If you think you can help in this major operation for Rex, please contact him by e-mail at rexsmith@glmwscouts.org.uk
Offsite Team
As the countdown to the 21st World Scout Jamboree has dropped below 100 days, I'm writing to let you know that there's still the chance for you, your fellow scout leaders, your friends and those not currently involved in scouting to get involved in an amazing event. For the Off Site Programme, We are still looking for instructors for climbing/abseiling at Gilwell Adventure and dinghy sailing, raft building and bell boating, as well as general staff to help with running challenge bases for "Aqua Challenge" or helping on the support team ˆ to make sure coaches are unloaded & loaded safely, provide maintenance staff or help out in a trading outlet, selling food and drinks etc. at Splash!
We recognise that there are a lot of people out there for whom working the whole of the Jamboree period or affording the IST fee has put them off volunteering to help. It was with this in mind that the Off-Site Team (OST) packages have been created. They offer flexible options, with costs covering food and camping only. There's even options to come and help out for free if you can find your own accommodation and catering in the area. We believe that the packages we are offering can benefit the UK activities scouting community in that adults can not only get involved and have fun, but they can also learn new skills/activities, make new friends and get a broader picture of scouting on a national and intrnational level.
I'd also like to let you know that we've closed applications for the Off-Site Team for other roles at Gilwell Adventure as we have reached our capacity although we are holding a waiting list.
Yours in Scouting,
eather Hale
amboree Core Team Member with responsibility for Off-Site Programme

Jack Petchey Grant
Left is a photo taken at the presentation of a project grant awarded to the GLNE Jamboree Unit from the Jack Petchey Foundation. The money awarded will be divided between the 45 young people attending the Jamboree from the County. Chris Bullock, Awards Officer from the foundation who presented the cheque to 7 member of the jamboree unit, spent part of his evening seeing scouting in action by being entertained by 15th Chingford Beavers and the Chingford Explorer Scout Unit.

Selection
On the weekend of 26th – 28th May, the selected Jamboree Contingent held their first camp at Hargreaves. The aim of the weekend was to ‘get to know each other’ and bond as a unit.
In the run up to a World Scout Jamboree, each unit is advised to hold a number of training camps/sessions as this will prepare the Scouts selected and hopefully enable them to gain the most out of the Jamboree experience.
The first item on our agenda for the weekend was to work out who would be in the quarter unit which would consist of 9 scouts to be led by James Armstrong. After explaining that the quarter unit had been linked with a Guide Unit from Cambridge and a Scout Troop from Montserrat in the West Indies, 9 scouts quickly volunteered! So with that out of the way the camp could begin.
Many activities had been laid on for the weekend with the focus of bonding with one another as the main priority. All of our games and activities worked well and by the end of the first night the Scouts had made many new friends.
The whole camp was enjoyed by both leaders and scouts and we cannot wait until the next one.

Be a Smartie and fill the tube
Calling ALL Beavers and Cubs: How Smart are you?
The Jamboree Contingent have asked the Beaver and Cub sections to help raise money for the Jamboree and also for your groups at the same time.
Basically, we are asking for each Beaver and Cub in the county to purchase a tube of ‘Smartie’s’ and eat them. Once the tube is empty, they should then fill it up with 20 pence pieces. We have calculated that a tube (be it round or the new hexagon shape) should hold £12.00. Once it is full, the Beaver / Cub should then hand it in to their Leader.
From the monies raised, half will go into the Jamboree Fund and the other half will be kept by the Beaver / Cub section. In return, each person who participates in raising money will be given a Jamboree Pen (A collector’s item in years to come!) It’s as simple as that.
The money for the Jamboree should then be given to your District Commissioner for collection at the County DC's meeting on Thursday 6th July.
This is such a huge fundraiser we could do really well and possibly make our Jamboree fund increase dramatically. We have also stated that if Scouts would like to participate in this fundraiser then great, we do not mind who takes part – the more the merrier.

World Jamboree
The 21st World Scout Jamboree will be hosted by the United Kingdom, in celebration of the centenary of Scouting. It will take place at Hylands Park Chelmsford (Essex) in the UK, from 27th July to 8th August 2007.
40,000 young people will camp, live and work alongside each other for 10 days. They will come from homes as diverse as Africa and Europe, cultures as different as Arab and American countries, and histories as varied as the Asia-Pacific and Eurasia regions. Together they will celebrate what unites them, and learn what they can do together to help build a better world.
Fees
The fee for UK Contingent members and leaders has now been set and will be no more than £1000 per person. The cost for IST will be no more than £800. The UK contingent are looking to reduce these figures over the coming months by making sensible savings on the budget where possible but in doing so, ensuring that UK Contingent members receive the most memorable experience possible.
